If your home is your happy place, there’s nothing better than giving it a makeover that reflects your own individual design tastes. Everyone deserves to love the space that they live in and putting your own stamp on its look and style is a great way to achieve this. Unfortunately, when it comes to getting creative with the look of your home, not everyone has free rein to decorate as they like.

For those in rented or council-owned accommodation, it may feel like there are limited options when it comes to decorating your home - especially the bathroom, which is often completely re-fitted when a new look is in order. Instead, tenants have had to learn to get creative with decorating, learning to update their homes in ways that can be reversed if necessary once they move onto their next property.

With around 4.4 million households in the UK living in a rented property, we’re pleased to report that there are plenty of helpful tips, tricks, hacks and products that can be used to achieve a renter friendly bathroom makeover, some of them available right here at DBS Bathrooms.

Here are just a few ideas to help you with a renter friendly bathroom makeover whilst keeping your landlord firmly on side!

Start with a new colour scheme

The interior design within rental homes is usually fairly minimal throughout and this almost always includes the bathroom – all-white or off-white, from ceiling to floor.

The good thing about this is that you have a blank canvas to work from, making it super easy to make a noticeable difference by simply injecting a pop of colour into your overall colour scheme.

An effective colour scheme tends to consist of 2 – 3 colours, usually a bold lead colour – green, blue, etc. – alongside two more neutral tones that work well in tandem. Working out what works well with your current base colour is key to pulling together the perfect renter-friendly bathroom makeover.

From there, you’ll be able to identify soft furnishings like towels, bathmats and shower curtains, décor and other features that will work beautifully within your new bathroom.

Cover counter tops with contact paper

Adding some stick and peel contact paper, which can be found in marble and wood effects among many others, is a quick renter friendly bathroom makeover. However, be warned that this won’t be waterproof, so might need to be replaced periodically depending on how long you live at the property.

Decorate floor space effectively

If your bathroom features a tiled floor, be sure to take advantage of this using peel-and-stick decorations.

Floor tile stickers are often an effective and affordable to add renter friendly bathroom tiles and are available in a wide range of colours and patterns.

If you want to go all out, it’s fairly easy to put together a full patterned floor using these stickers but be warned – as a renter-friendly option, peel and stick decorations can be removed as easily as they can be applied, so a floor full of them may not be a particularly durable, long-wearing option.

For a simpler and longer-lasting, yet still very effective renter friendly bathroom makeover, consider using fewer stickers and placing them to break up the existing tile pattern. For example, if your bathroom floor is made up only of white tiles, consider breaking this pattern with a block of colour by applying scattered peel and stick tiles at irregular intervals within the pattern.

Not only will this be much simpler to do in the first place, but using fewer stickers means that replacing stickers that begin to look worn down will be quicker and easier.
