Bohemian chic has grown in popularity in recent years.

Also known as boho, this trend saw a resurgence in the 2010s in both fashion and home décor. Boho accents can be mixed into many different design themes; you can add a few splashes into a mid-century modern bathroom, or even soften a contemporary space with some rugged boho accessories.

This is a bathroom trend that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, so we’re here to tell you how to achieve the perfect boho bathroom. So, get ready to channel your inner free spirit, and create a relaxing space with this guide.

What is boho style?

Boho style is a combination of eclectic patterns, textures, and colours. It’s a relaxed look that pulls inspiration from the hippie movement of the late 60s and 70s, as well as from global cultures.

Using boho style in your bathroom helps to create a layered and comfortable look that can be personalised. Boho style is all about being laidback and calm; you can create your very own indoor oasis by using warm, natural materials.

How to create a boho chic bathroom

Despite the nature of boho style being ‘anything goes’, there are some things to look out for when trying to achieve the perfect boho bathroom:

Colour palette

Something to be particularly conscious of when creating a boho bathroom is the colour palette you select. There is a focus on natural materials and colours when it comes to this style but be wary of using any cool tones – such as greys – as this can be more industrial.

Instead, aim for warm, earthy tones.

Think of deep brown, like Dulux’s Colour of the Year, white, cream, terracotta and even teal, ochre and maroon. These are all warm-toned shades that will work well alongside each other, as well as complementing the overall theme of the bathroom. Our brown wall panels or red wall panels could be the perfect addition.

Walls

You have free rein when creating a boho bathroom to play with as many colours and textures as you would like. When you think of materials, think natural – wood, concrete, and stone.

Natural materials for walls can be pricey, and some aren’t really suited to the bathroom – wood, for example, is particularly absorbent and will need to be treated if you want to use it in your bathroom. To create a boho bathroom on a budget that is sure to last a lifetime, consider bathroom wall panels instead. They’re easy to clean and even easier to install.

Consider a beige concrete panel for a feature wall to add some warmth to your space. This grey brick effect panel is perfectly distressed, giving a shabby chic effect.

You don’t have to be restricted to natural materials, either – a white subway tile panel can offset boho accessories really well, and is perfectly on trend too. You can install a bathroom feature wall in a funky pattern for the ultimate boho effect.

Baths, sinks, showers and toilets

When it comes to bathroom furniture, the more traditional the better.

A classic, free-standing bath will look wonderful against some funky accessories. You could choose a black model, or even a copper soaking tub to add a spark of colour and something more unique. In our opinion, nothing looks more boho than a shower-bath combo, making it the perfect theme for a smaller bathroom, too. Install a traditional shower, perhaps in gold or copper, over the freestanding bath to create a vintage, relaxed feel.

A pedestal sink with gold or copper metalware will also look wonderful, or even a brightly painted vanity in an earthy tone with a clay sink on top would look fabulously bohemian. A traditional back to wall toilet, perhaps even with a long chain flush, will fit right in.

Storage options

As our living spaces are gradually becoming more urban, they are growing smaller – and we need all the storage space we can get. Consider a wooden cabinet, but make sure to seal it to avoid the wood soaking up too much moisture.

Aside from a cabinet, you could also use a large wooden ladder for a shelf. This creates open storage, meaning you could stack pretty accessories and the like on it without taking up too much space.

Additionally, you could add some woven baskets for towel storage – or even dirty laundry – as these will add to the overall boho feel.

Flooring

Again, a wooden floor will be perfect for a boho bathroom; but wood doesn’t always make for the most durable floor material when it comes to a bathroom. The amount of water a bathroom floor encounters on a daily basis is more than you can imagine, and a wooden floor will soak up every last drop.

Instead, you could opt for some patterned floor tiles to add some more interest to the space.

Or, for a traditional look, choose waterproof flooring with a wood effect, such as this natural oak - this is perfectly neutral but still warm, and the lightness of the colour will help to keep your bathroom bright.

Add some vintage rugs, with jute or boho prints, to tie the room together. Even a faux fur rug could really complement your décor.

Accessories and soft furnishings

Hand towels could be standard white, or off white to add to the overall relaxed feel.

You could seek out a fringed shower curtain, or one with a boho pattern to soften up your bath space. Aside from soft furnishings, think of accessories in a maximalist way – the more you have, the better.

Wooden-framed mirrors or side tables will look beautiful, but if you do choose to have wood in your bathroom be sure to seal it effectively.

Have an abundance of plants; in fact, try your very best to turn your bathroom into a greenhouse for the best effect. The more greenery, the more boho it will look. Not only this, but plenty of plants thrive in bathroom environments due to the humidity, and they’ll freshen up your air as they freshen up the space.

You could hang some artwork – think folksy, creative pieces, or even an old map can make for interesting wall décor. Lots of candles can also add to the relaxing nature of this space and can look eclectic too.
