Despite taps being amongst some of the smaller features in your bathroom, they hold a large amount of potential as they can truly elevate your space alongside a bathroom feature wall. A good bathroom tap can tie a look together as well as take it to new levels of style. They are small in stature but big in impact, so it’s important that you get them right - otherwise, they might blend into your bathroom splashback panels.

To make choosing the perfect bathroom tap a little bit easier, we have composed this guide to help you along the way.

Types of bathroom tap

Before you choose a tap for your basin it’s important to work out which kind will fit – you must consider practical elements as well as stylistic, such as fittings and tap washers. Each bathroom basin comes with pre-drilled holes for taps, so this will determine which kind of taps you need. The type of tap you can choose all depends on whether you have one or two holes.

Pillar taps

If you have two holes drilled in your basin, then pillar taps are your only option. These are sets of two taps, one for hot water and one for cold. They come in a wide variety of styles and are usually featured in traditional bathrooms, marked with beautiful vintage flair. However, they do come in more modern styles too, so there’s something for every bathroom (they'll look great against modern wall panels, too!).

Basin mixer taps

If you have one hole in your basin, you could opt for a mixer tap. These combine hot and cold water flow, and it streamlines out from one spout. This type of tap can allow you to precisely control the water temperature, which is adjusted either by a lever or twin handles.

Wall mounted tap

For countertop basins, a wall mounted tap may be the best option. These are fitted to the wall adjacent to your fixtures and typically feature a single spout design, with either a single lever or two levers. These work really well in either traditional or contemporary bathrooms, and bathroom wall panels can be easily fitted around them.

What is a non concussive tap?

Non concussive taps work by pushing down on the top of the tap to start the flow of water, for a set amount of time. The top of the tap is self closing, meaning it will slowly work its way back to the original position. This will switch off the water flow, once the set time limit has been reached.

Types of spouts

The spout is the part of the tap that the water flows from. These are a major point of consideration when choosing the right taps for your bathroom.

Tall mixer

These are particularly long taps, which overlook a basin. They are dramatic fixtures, but they do require slightly more space than your average tap. Tall mixers add heaps of style to your bathroom and offer clean lines and simplicity for a modern space.

Free fall mixer

A free fall mixer is the height of luxury for a bathroom nowadays – water flows from them gently, cascading into a showpiece basin. These are truly statement pieces and will be a complimented feature within your bathroom. However, as we all know, luxury comes at a price, so these won’t come cheap.

Traditional or contemporary?

Basin taps provide the finishing touches that can completely transform your space, and they can really tie in your theme too. Generally, taps are either traditional or modern, and either can look great in your space.

Traditional taps can highlight a vintage bathroom or complement a modern-vintage combination. They usually are rounded in metallic finishes. Handles often include white or black accents, and they can timelessly elevate any bathroom.

Contemporary taps, on the other hand, feature minimalistic designs and clean lines. They aren’t so much statement pieces as simplistic accessories that can enhance your other fixtures.

Colour options

Many years ago, we would have believed that chrome was the only sane option for bathroom metalware. However, colour is a very important aspect to consider nowadays as there are multiple different options - to match the variety of coloured wall panels in our range.

Chrome is, of course, timeless – it’s durable, easy to clean, and has great brightening effects due to its strong polished look. However, black fixtures - either gloss or matte – can add some drama to your space. Matte black features in particular are chic and provide a beautiful contrast to lighter colours in the room.

For luxury, consider gold or copper taps – these can warm up your bathroom, and add a rich feel.
